The Fear of the Lens
Most people get a little nervous when a camera starts rolling. Even the most confident project managers or CEOs can freeze up when they hear 'action.' At Lookout Visuals, our job is to make that discomfort disappear. Here is how you can help your team prepare for their moment in the spotlight.
Focus on the 'Why,' Not the 'Script'
The biggest mistake people make is trying to memorize a script. When someone reads from a teleprompter or tries to recall lines, they sound mechanical. We don't want a performance; we want a conversation.
Instead of writing out full sentences, create a list of bulleted talking points. Know the key message you want to get across, but let the phrasing happen in the moment. When you speak from your own experience, you sound like an expert—because you are.
Setting the Stage
We typically conduct interviews in environments that are relevant to your work. If you are a Chattanooga-based manufacturing firm, we will record on the shop floor or in your meeting rooms.
- Dress Naturally: Wear what you would normally wear to a client meeting. Don't worry about being too 'dressed up.'
- Body Language: Relax your shoulders. Sit or stand in a way that feels natural to you. If you talk with your hands, keep doing it.
- Ignore the Camera: Look at the interviewer, not the lens. This trick helps people forget they are being filmed and creates a much more genuine connection with the viewer.
The Editing Process
Remind your team that they don't need to be perfect. Our role in the edit suite is to take the best parts of the conversation and piece them together into a cohesive narrative. If you trip over a word, we just stop, reset, and try again. The pressure to get it right in one take doesn't exist. Our goal is to capture the authentic, human side of your business, and that is only possible when people feel comfortable enough to just be themselves.
