If there's a contractor segment that benefits more from video than pool builders, we haven't found it.
A pool build is a six-to-twelve-week transformation of a backyard from empty grass (or worse, a mud pit) into a finished oasis with decking, water features, and lighting. The before is unremarkable. The after is the kind of thing people drive by and slow down to look at.
If you're only showing after photos, you're leaving the best part of the story untold.
The Build Timelapse: Your Best Asset
The most powerful pool marketing video isn't the finished pool — it's the process compressed. Set a camera (or a drone) at the same position each week during the build, shoot 30 seconds of footage, and stitch them together at the end. Excavation. Steel. Gunite. Tile. Decking. Water. Pool filled.
Seven clips. Ninety seconds. The viewer watches a backyard materialize from dirt to oasis in the time it takes to scroll through an Instagram feed.
That timelapse does something photos can't: it communicates the scope of work. It shows the excavation depth, the steel grid, the plumbing runs — the engineering that justifies your price tag. When a prospective client understands what goes into the build, they stop asking "why does it cost that much?" and start asking "when can you start?"
The B-Roll Package
Beyond the timelapse, here's what to capture during a pool build:
- Excavation day — The track hoe carving the hole. It's dramatic, it's loud, and it signals "something big is happening here."
- Gunite shoot — The crew spraying concrete. It's visually striking and most homeowners have never seen the process.
- Decking and coping — The craftsmanship phase. Tight shots of tile being set, coping being laid, the detail work that separates a custom pool from a cookie-cutter install.
- Fill day — The moment water starts running into the pool. It's the emotional turning point of the build.
Drone: Before, During, and After
Pools are best understood from above. The pool's relationship to the house, the yard, the property lines — all of it only makes sense from an aerial perspective.
Fly the site three times:
- Before excavation — The empty backyard. This is your "before" baseline.
- Mid-build — Steel in, gunite done, shaping visible. Shows progress for client updates.
- After completion — The finished pool, filled, with decking and landscaping done. Shot at dusk if possible — the lighting and water combo from above is the single most shareable piece of content a pool builder can produce.
The Underwater Shot
Here's something most pool builders aren't doing. A waterproof camera — even a GoPro on a pole — capturing the interior of the finished pool from below the waterline gives you a shot nobody else has. The tile line, the water clarity, the color of the plaster from inside the pool. It's a five-second clip that makes your project page feel different from every competitor who just posted a drone shot.
The Reveal Testimonial
Same principle as the remodeler's kitchen reveal we covered last time. Walk the homeowner to the edge of the finished pool. Let them see it for the first time. Film their reaction.
Then sit them down — poolside, in the space you built — and let them talk. Ask them what the backyard was before. Ask them what their kids do out here now. The testimonial writes itself when someone is sitting next to a pool they've been dreaming about for two years.
The Full Package: One Project, Five Assets
A single pool build, properly documented, gives you:
- Build timelapse video
- Drone before, during, and after
- B-roll of the construction process
- Underwater interior footage
- A poolside client testimonial
Edit that into a 60-to-90-second project video. Put it on your homepage. Put it on your Google Business Profile. Put it in your bid presentations.
A prospective client watching that video isn't wondering if you can build a pool. They're already picturing their own backyard.
That's what a media-first website does. It doesn't describe what you do. It proves it — project by project, backyard by backyard, one real homeowner at a time.
